About the event
Voters in October’s municipal election in Stouffville will have a convenient way to determine which candidates have an agenda to get our community ready for the impacts of climate change. Sustainable Stouffville, a local volunteer organization, has developed a Climate Readiness Pledge for candidates, and will let residents know who has signed it through regular social media and website updates during the campaign.
The Pledge outlines how climate change is expected to disrupt communities throughout York Region with hotter, wetter, and wilder weather. It also points out Stouffville’s lack of climate plans and commitments relative to neighbouring municipalities. Finally, it lists seven concrete actions that a candidate, if elected, will take to combat these extreme climatic effects. Ultimately, it is a commitment to build community resilience and ensure local self-sufficiency.
